ShakeOut - New Zealand's earthquake drill and tsunami hīkoi

Posted by Sentinel on 27/10/21 6:13 PM | 1 minute read

At 09:30am Thursday October 28th, organisations across New Zealand will run preparedness and response drills for earthquake and tsunami. ShakeOut takes place  to remind people of the right action to take during an earthquake. Drop, Cover and Hold. You can also practise a tsunami hīkoi (evacuation) if you're in a coastal area.

This year, subscribers to the Sentinel earthquake monitoring service, can bring more realism to their drill by receiving an earthquake notification to their mobile. Plus, after ShakeOut, data will be presented in the Sentinel mobile App showing how the simulated earthquake would impact an earthquake prone building versus an earthquake resilient building.

All Sentinel App users will receive notification when the test is occurring and this can be used as part of your ShakeOut drill. Please remember for ShakeOut drills on October 28th, to activate notifications in the App. To do this, go to Settings>Notification Settings, then activate "Send Notification" and "Send New Earthquake Alert".

After ShakeOut, if you would like to view a comparison of the shaking experienced in an earthquake resilient building versus an earthquake prone building, get in touch or watch our blog! We'll publish a review.
